While the soul provides life, sentience and consciousness, it is the job of the aurum to protect and even manipulate outside forces in order to preserve the soul itself. While by nature it prevents outside sources from coming in, the aurum is capable of being "activated" in a multitude of different ways, each allowing the soul to manipulate outside elements that have vastly different powers and capabilities. From the highest divine blessed to the earthly shaman, each possess an activated aurum that allows them to use magical elements that allow them to do feats only thought of in pure fantasy. One big importance to note is that an aurum can only achieve one true state at a time, and as such every type of activated aurum is mutually exclusive to the other.

A unique shell that surrounds a soul when it has latched on to a compatible host, this strange formation creates a sort of protective barrier that prevents any rogue effects from causing damage to the soul after it has been successfully anchored. While this is often but a tertiary purpose in the long run, it is speculated this reason why it exists to begin with. Though it can only be seen by mortals when activated into a myriad of different forms, the structure itself when inactive is much like a snow globe, encasing and encircling the soul and sealing it off from the outside. It is unknown whether the soul itself forms this or it is a side effect of becoming attached to a host.. but regardless of the truth, the result is the formation of what we now know today as The Aurum.

Aurum Variations

The mark is often recognized by a user when the aurum and soul combine or separate completely from one another. Most users given power by a dragon often quite literally wear it on their sleeve. Their soul is either taken by the dragon and the aurum shifted to create a tattoo upon their arm, or the soul and the arum are uniquely molded into said tattoo.

The bond is often described as one of six different looking elements that keep the most similar to the snow globe like description of the aurum. From dripping magma, flowing water, currents of wind, mountainous stones, forested land and purple miasma, the bond is often quite clear to those who view it, and just what spirit the shaman has come together with.

The jewel is often seen as the most simple yet beautiful of the aurum when viewed, as the aurum quite literally takes the shape of a beautiful cut diamond.

The spark is by far the most common of all the different types of aurum within the universe of Aethier, and appears to be much like a bumpy, crystallized form of the base aurum, with currents of magic running through like circuitry.

The portion of the Aurum which is transformed by the Archfey, is known to some as the 'Root'. When viewed by those who can see the potency of souls, their soul appears like a flower, the color of its blossoming akin to which court they serve. Their physical form holds a mark of the Archfey, a tattooed set of wings based on the one they serve that glows when they use their abilities.

The soul of a Branded appears normal, there are no visual changes present.

The flame is often referred to as such due to its resemblance of exactly what it is called. A great, blazing flame of divine energy circles and protects the soul, allowing it to wield the divine power of aura in its pure, untainted form. To the naked arcane eye, this can often be a blinding and unsightly prospect, let alone to those of the profane or unholy variety.
