Description
Forest Kelp are considered to be the trees of the ocean, partly because of how large they can grow. Some Forest Kelp have been noted as being upwards of 50 meters tall. These trees stem upwards from the sandy ocean floor with a thick trunk at their center. Several long and flowing “branches” of kelp extend at various angles from the tree’s midsection, but most of them curve to be pointing straight upwards the longer they grow out. Forest Kelp can have so many long kelp branches that they can easily serve as a habitat for different types of marine life.
The kelp leaves of a Forest Kelp are very large, slimy, and thick, most often possessing colors from murky greens to shades of brown. One branch from a Forest Kelp can have several hundred leaves present upon it. Forest Kelp sway with the current of the ocean and are considered to be harmless. Their name is derived from the fact that Forest Kelp tend to grow in clusters, several of the sea trees sprouting nearby one another similarly to trees in a forest on land.
Location
Forest Kelp can be found growing upwards from the ocean floor, sometimes growing so high that they nearly reach the surface. They are only capable of growing in the salt water environment of the ocean and they can only sprout from sandy ground. Forest Kelp are fairly easy to find due to their massive size and the fact that they tend to grow in groups.
Development
When a Forest Kelp first sprouts, it grows very rapidly, maturing to full size in less than a tsel. An entire cluster of Forest Kelp will often sprout simultaneously, growing a full “underwater forest”. Just as these trees are quick to grow, they are also quick to die. After ten tsels of life, most Forest Kelp will unroot from the ground and be released into the ocean, drifting off as dead plant life.
Material Properties
- The elasticity of Forest Kelp branches that have their leaves removed allow them to function effectively as whips, slingshots, and “rubber bands”, and are the best material for doing so.
Alchemical Properties
- When the leaves are cooked and consumed, they provide the consumer the ability to speak audibly and clearly underwater temporarily.
