Description

Being the most northern growing tree in the realm, the Whistle pine is a testament to survival in the harshest place in the world. Standing at a normal height of around 30-40 feet, this giant lives on the coastal regions of the far north, where the winter is a constant, and winds are a violent burning cold. How this tree survives in such a barren place is due to its unique structure. Since the pine is such a tall tree, it has adapted to be "woven" together like vines, many branch like structures forming into that of its trunk and peak. These branches are capable of shifting and moving with the wind allowing it protection against being blown over. Due to this fact, this tree is said to be the most flexible in the realm, and will produce sounds much like the metal Siran if listening from afar. These sounds are said to be like wind chimes along the coast, and aid sailors in storms to finding their way home. These wind chime like sounds are produced by the crystal like cones that this tree produces during its time of reproduction. These pods grow only during the winter months of the year, ranging from around 4-6 months. When these cones fall, they will often move by the wind blowing, or by animals consuming them then releasing their seeds onto another area of terrain. The most notable thing about the pine is that their bark is extremely thick, like a coat over the inner wood, the bar can often look like wool from afar, tricking those who are perhaps a bit too cold. These trees when full grown will produce a wind chime like effect which can echoes for miles off shore and inland, giving a beacon to those lost in winter storms, or cannot find their way through the snow. The sound has also been known to attract creatures of all manner, from dangerous to hunting game.

Location

The whistle pine is found most densely in the far coastal regions of the north, but can be found almost anywhere in the northern snow lands. This tree seem incapable of living anywhere else, seeming dependent on the harsh winters to survive. The trees who are planted on areas such as the coastal cliffs are said to be the largest of their species, often sending their sounds of the wind chimes for miles inland, and out toward sea.

Development

This pine will start out just like any of its kind, sprouting from a seed until it breaks the surface of the soil, but after this the whistle pine is notably different. Due to its strange structure the weaving branch like base of the tree sprouts up like coral going everywhere for the first few seasons of its growth, once it begins to reach maturity, these branches will begin to pull into one body, weaving together to form the trunk of the tree, from there these branches simply continue growing outward to form branches and further heighten the pine until its full maturity is reached. The Pine will reach full maturity after planting in about [2 OOC] months, producing cones once full grown and every [3 OOC] months after with about 6-10 cones as their maximum per harvest.

Material Properties

  • These trees when full grown will produce a wind chime like effect which can echoes for miles off shore and inland, giving a beacon to those lost in winter storms, or cannot find their way through the snow. The sound has also been known to attract creatures of all manner, from dangerous to regular game.

Alchemical Properties

  • These cones are crystal like and quite hard, within is a sweet wine like liquid without any alcoholic effect, but when ingested has the natural effect of lowering the body's temperature. It will continue to do so until the person dies or is stopped when raw, but when refined with alchemy, can be further controlled and prevented from outright killing.
